Motorcycle Noise.

It’s a quality of life issue: motorcycle noise.  You know, those loud motorcycles that are illegally modified to make excessive noise.  It’s the type of contraption only a brain-dead individual would own; one would have to be brain-dead to make a road vehicle louder.

Illegal motorcycle exhaust modifications impact everyone in at least a quarter-mile radius from the offending vehicle.  Many of these noise machines are found driving around Westwood and the Pascack Valley every day.  Why won’t the police enforce the local noise ordinances as well as the NHTSA and EPA regulations on motorcycle emissions??

It is a disturbing reality that Westwood’s overstaffed and overpaid cops turn a blind eye to quality of life issues like excessive noise emanating from illegally-modified motorcycles on local roads.

  1. Agree. They are obnoxious. Most motorcycles are designed / manufactured so that a reasonable amount of exhaust noise is produced.
Many riders/owners remove the OEM equipment and replace it with ‘straight pipes’. Furthermore, these same riders/owners enjoy throttling the engine in busier/downtown areas. It’s some sort of psychoses.

  2. What about those dopey car’s with the mufflers cut out and the loud stereo’s. At least the motorcycles are nostalgic.

  3. I would have to agree. Straight pipes should be illegal! I live close to the GSP and these horrible machines are ruining my life. I wish law enforcement would ticket these beasts. I hate the Harley Davidson “road thunder” that shakes my walls and window every day. I now dread the spring when these monsters resurface.

  4. I’ve noticed that some of the larger bikes are remarkably quiet; others (both large and small) make so much noise that I’ve wondered if their exhaust systems are legal. Each year, on a certain Sunday morning in mid-September, I have heard an excessive number of these unnecessarily loud machines roaring through the area over an extended period of time. Yesterday was one such day. I have assumed that these machines are connected with the Andiamo motorcycle run that is advertised by orange lawn signs in the weeks preceding the date.

I don’t object to a motorcycle rally passing through my community on a Sunday morning once a year. Not all of the machines are excessively loud. I object most strongly, however, to the continual inclusion of many unnecessarily loud machines in the caravan. The rally organizers have established a pattern of unneighborly conduct by including such machines in their event.

Municipal governing bodies should require the rally organizers to post appropriate security for the privilege of running motorcyles through their communities, expressly conditioned upon unnecessarily loud/illegally modified motorcycles being excluded from the event. A default by the rally organizers should trigger a forfeiture of the security.
